MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -
South Florida rising Sophomore Rigel Fernandes shot an even par 72 on Friday to maintain a 5 shot lead going into the final round of The Rice Planters Invitational at Snee Farm Country Club in Mt. Pleasant on Friday.
Fernandes will go into the final round on Saturday with the lead over Purdue's Zhongyang Fu and Travis Smyth who are each at -7. James Madison's Ryan Cole is at -6.
Dru Love, son of PGA golfer Davis Love III, shot a 66 on Friday, the lowest round of the afternoon, to move into a four-way tie for 5th place at -5.
Other notables include Wando alum/CSU golfer Jarrett Swan at -4, Bishop England's Jamie Wilson at -3 and another PGA son, Scotty Verplank at +5.
Charleston Southern was also the winner of the tournament's 2nd annual Atkinson Cup which goes to the school that has the lowest score with at least 3 players in the field. The Bucs combined for a total score of 648 to win the award, named for local golfer Bert Atkinson, that was won by Virginia Tech last year.
The final round is set to begin at 8 am on Saturday.
