Ohio Attorney General Mike Dewine paid a visit to Toledo News Now on Friday June 20. Dewine says one of the biggest issues affecting the state are scams.

"The con artists have figured out what button to push or how to get the sympathy of that person," said Dewine.

Dewine says that his office receives thousands of calls about scams. These scams range from your typical home improvement scam to scams involving puppies. On average, victims of puppy scams are losing over a thousand dollars each.

"What the con artists have done now is they've gone up and posted pictures of puppies that they say are their puppies, and the whole deal is they want your money, so you wire them money," said Dewine.

Dewine says he and his office are aggressively attacking the problem in his crackdown on scams in Ohio.

"We are now prosecuting a number of these cases. We're working with local county prosecuting attorneys. We're working the cases, working with them and putting these people behind bars," said Dewine.

There are certain things that you can do to avoid becoming a victim of a scam.

"We just ask people to take a deep breath, stand back and try to analyze it. If they have a question, call the attorney general's office. We hear these scams every day," said Dewine.

The attorney general says that con artists will usually target the elderly. For more information, visit www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov
