Driver dies in crash that ended Old West End police chase

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A police chase in Toledo's Old West End ended in a fatal crash Thursday.

Toledo police say Lance Braswell, 34, was beating up Shelisha Garth in the area of Walnut and Sherman in north Toledo. Crews arrived and spotted Braswell's SUV circling the area. That's when the pursuit began.

Shortly after noon Toledo Police began chasing a car at Franklin and Bancroft. That car sped up Bancroft to Parkwood and turned on Parkwood. Police say Braswell wouldn't stop, bolted west on Bancroft Street and crossed Collingwood Boulevard. He lost control of his vehicle, smashing into a utility pole and tree.

Braswell was removed from the vehicle and transported to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

A witness says he was scared, but grateful nobody was hit during the chase. He claimed speeds in the chase reached 100 miles an hour down Bancroft.

"He ran the light and as he ran the light I looked back again. I heard a loud noise, and he had run into the pole across the street from the church," said witness Jerry Jackson.

Jackson says he remembers seeing nothing but a puff of smoke after impact.

"It was very scary because I was just on my way home. This car comes out of Seaway and almost hits me, with the police chasing him. I panicked at first," said witness Rhonda.

Toledo police say the accident remains under investigation. Garth is being interviewed.
