Afghan war vet burns rubber at sports car event

SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

There were no airplanes on one part of the tarmac Sunday at Toledo Express Airport.

On this Fathers Day, it was turned into a race course.

The Sports Car Club of America circuit came in for a series of timed race heats.

Two hundred drivers burned some rubber and competed for trophies.

Partnering with the club is VETMotorsports.

The group places post 9/11 injured combat veterans behind the wheel of a car to compete with other drivers.

"What it does is gets them back into the environment of high adrenaline so they can understand that adrenaline rush is normal and also gets them to work in the civilian populations which they have a hard time integrating into," said Peter Cline of VETMotorsports.

Ian Moon is a retired Army veteran who was wounded by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

He's now in re-hab and says the driving experience on the one mile course gives him a sense of entitlement.

"I think one of the largest things is the teamwork that is involved. That's one of the huge things we learn with the military. Get to come out and do that with a team here," said Ian.

What made this day memorable as Ian rounded the course in a red Chevy was having his dad Pete track side.

"Knowing what he's done and sacrificed. I'm really proud of him and the position he's taken in defending his country," said Pete.

Ian added, "even though I'm retired now, I get to spend a lot more time with family and that's a benefit."

It's even better when your dad is there to cheer you on across the finish line.
