ODOT kicks off I-475/US23 ramp construction at Central Avenue

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

If you drive on interstate 475 where it connects with US 23 in Sylvania Township, get ready for orange barrels.

The Ohio Department of Transportation began work  on I-475/US 23 at Central Avenue on Monday, June 16.

Those who have made the trek know that merging from I-475 westbound to US-23 southbound, then exiting at Central Avenue is a feat in light traffic. During rush hour, it's sometimes impossible.

That's because the distance between the left side entrance ramp to I-475 and the right side exit ramp onto Central is extremely short. This project aims to solve that problem.

ODOT will build a separate ramp from I-475 to Central Avenue.

Drivers say they will be glad to see the new ramp built, but are not excited to see orange barrels in the area.

"I do it every day, yes, coming home. And it's a pain in the neck. It's a little scary at times so I am glad to hear that they are going to be changing it and making it a lot safer for us," said John Stedcke.

"Every other day I am in Detroit, so I am used to the orange barrels, going back and forth. It's just something that you deal with as long as you are courteous and aware that is going on and patient. It will be ok," said Mike Breihl.

The project will bring nightly lane restrictions. Drivers will also notice large trucks hauling dirt in the area during the day.

Businesses in the area are concerned construction could impact business.

"It is our number one way to get to Central Avenue, to the Central Avenue strip," said Dave Wittenmyer with Jim White Toyota in Sylvania.
