Toledo organization works to combat hunger for children

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The problem of hunger is on the rise in Toledo. One local organization is helping to feed children in Lucas County one mouth at a time.

The Believe Center in south Toledo is one of the many places throughout the city feeding children all summer long. Feed Lucas County Children is the organization behind the delicious and nutritious meals. They are working not only during the summer but throughout the entire school year.

"The family poverty situation in Toledo has increased over the last decade where roughly somewhere around 25 to 33% of Toledo family areas are living right at the poverty level or below," said Carty Finkbeiner, Chairman, Feed Lucas County Children.

Additionally more than 5,000 children in Toledo enjoy these free meals at 76 different locations in Lucas County.

"We're in a lot of parks, community centers. We're in churches, we're in schools and then we have a lot of charitable organizations that partner with us," said Tony Siebeneck, Executive Director, Feed Lucas County Children.

The children are served hot, balanced meals each weekday including fruits and vegetables. All the kids seem to have their favorites.

"Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes," said one child.

"Walking tacos and Salisbury steak," said another child.

Children can enjoy these free meals Monday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m.
