TIFFIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

State money is coming to the city of Tiffin for infrastructure improvements that will help keep students safe.

Last year, the city applied for a Safe Routes to School grant through the Ohio Department of Transportation. Last week, the city was informed it would receive $220,000 for improvements around the city's schools.

Only 20 percent of the communities who applied for the grant were approved.

The application process for Tiffin was in collaboration with Tiffin City Schools and Calvert Catholic. The money will go toward sidewalk improvements, crosswalk upkeep and new crosswalk signs. An additional $30,000 is going toward educational programs for the students, like Safety City.

All improvements will be done around Tiffin elementary schools, due to the district's restructuring which building certain grades now attend.

"It used to be, if you were a kindergartner or first grader, you could walk to school with a fifth or sixth grader. Now, you don't have that luxury. All of the first graders, for example, are in the same building. So these safety improvements are really going to have a ripple effect to really makes those crossing safer for students," said Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz.

The state money has been awarded to the city for fiscal year 2018, but that timeline could be moved to an earlier date in the future.
