Downtown Swanton building coming down, even after setbacks

SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Parts of downtown Swanton have been blocked off due to an unstable building in the heart of the downtown area.

Now the village is one step closure to demolishing the building, but there have been set backs.

The village administrator says building inspectors found asbestos inside the former laundry mat which will slowdown the demolition process. The building must now be cleared of the asbestos before being torn down. Officials say the demolition should be complete within 30 days.

Business owners say they have been told the space where the building now stands will be used for parking.

"Downtown would greatly benefit from a parking lot. A lot of times there is no parking down here so hopefully that will making that better. I will be very happy when it is down and I think things will return to normal and I am anxious to have it happen," said Computer Plus owner Edward Taft.

Swanton Village Council members approved the demolition during their last council meeting.
