Man arrested on parole violation after knocking on doors to ask for money

TIFFIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Tiffin Police have arrested a man after receiving multiple calls from residents saying he was knocking on their doors asking for money.

Over the last two days, Tiffin Police received multiple calls about a man going up to front doors and saying he is just looking for some money. Police put out an alert on the man because they believed this activity could have had an ulterior motive.

Multiple residents say the man told them he needed money for his dad, who is in the hospital or for a ride out of town. Tiffin Police posted a 'be on the lookout' post to their Facebook page about the man.

An officer from the Fostoria Police Department saw the post and cross referenced it with similar reports in Fostoria. Just after 4 p.m. Thursday, police arrested 33-year-old Thomas M. Stiger. Stiger was recently from prison.

Though his story seemed innocent enough, police say they have seen this criminal tactic before. That is why they were wary of this activity.

"Based on multiple reports it is raising concerns with us that he might be trying to case houses to break into, and when somebody comes to the door he has a cover story to cover for himself, and then he leaves," said Lt. Jason Windsor with the Tiffin Police Department.

Stiger is being held on parole violation, but he could also be facing disorderly conduct, trespassing and criminal mischief charges.
