STRIVE programs helps students get diplomas

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Toledo Police Officer is working double duty and helping a lot of people along the way.

Officer Flo Wormely's day job is at the Toledo Police substation in Ottawa Park, but there is something else she's doing that may be just as important as her police work.

"I was unable to find educational programs that I like, so my son said ‘why don't you develop your own?" said Wormely.

That is how the STRIVE program started 15 years ago. Officer Wormely and the tutors that assist her have helped a countless number of people get their diplomas.

"The tutors are certified teachers from the Toledo Public School system and Washington Local and I have 3 science teachers, two math teachers, 1 social studies teacher and one teacher that takes care of the reading and the writing portion," said Wormely.

Bianca Grinter went through the strive program ten years ago. She says because of the program back then, she's enjoying success today.

"Officer Wormely pushed me and pushed me until I couldn't  push myself any more. I graduated on time. I now work for Chrysler," said Grinter.

Elonda Davis of Toledo signed up her 19-year-old grandson on Tuesday after hearing great things about the program.

"It's a wonderful thing when you have other people who are willing to reach out and help you get where you need to be and a lot of young people need that," said Davis.

The STRIVE program takes place from June 6 through June 20 and cost $40.
