TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Council voted Tuesday June 17 to use $300,000in city money to help tear down the Clarion Hotel.

Danger is lurking at an abandoned building on Reynolds that was a hotel in Toledo. The hotel has been abandoned since 2009 and fire officials say there may have been people living inside. The fire caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

"I used to work here in the 90's. It was a beautiful place, I mean people came from all over," said Andy Davis.

The fire Sunday served as a reminder that this 11-story dilapidated building is a danger.

"We can see evidence that folks have illegally trespassed into the building. There's evidence that people have set up shop or whatever to various stages in there," said Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld, Toledo Fire and Rescue.

City officials say the building is an eyesore and it has to go. The price tag for the demolition is $850,000. $300,000 of that would come from the city budget and the rest will come from federal and state funding.

"The city's committed to demolishing the property soon as the budget passes city council, we'll be poised to demolish the building and clear the property and pave the way for redevelopment," said Joel Mazur.

Fire officials say that the fire started on the third floor and spread to the fourth floor. It is being considered arson. The cause still remains under investigation. City officials say the building has been vandalized repeatedly and the fire protection system has been deemed inoperable because most of the copper piping has been stolen.

"We've heard over and over, and I've been saying it since I got on council in January, in talking with the mayor and talking with economic development, there was a lot of crime going on there. We had drug dealers in there, we had prostitution in there," said Matt Cherry.

Council members say they hope to secure the property within the next week or two and hope to begin demolition in July.
