TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Toledo Walleye introduced their new head coach at a press conference Monday morning.

Derek Lalonde, formerly of the Green Bay Gamblers USHL club, will step into the role next season.

Lalonde will replace Nick Vitucci, who stepped down last season as coach but who still works for the organization.

Vitucci has been head coach in Toledo since 2003, first for the Toledo Storm and then for the Walleye.

Lalonde was most recently the head coach and general manager for the Gamblers.

"We are extremely pleased to have Derek on our team," Walleye President Joe Napoli said.  "He was the one who stood out during a very rigorous interviewing process of quality candidates."

"My whole coaching career has been about player development, and in the ECHL there has to be a balance between player development and winning. That's why I think I'm a good fit for Toledo and Toledo is a good fit for me," said Lalonde.

Lalonde's coaching experience includes time as Assistant Coach at the University of Denver (2006-2011), Ferris State University (2002-2006), Hamilton College (2000-2002), Lebanon Valley College (1998-2000), and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (1995-1998). He played collegiate hockey at Cortland State University in Cortland, New York from 1991-1995 as a goaltender.
