SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A new strip of retail locations and an indoor athletic facility are coming to Springfield Township. The new building will be built in front of the existing "Man Caves" at the intersection of Airport Highway and Albon Road.

First, Glass City Athletics will build an indoor athletic facility on the property. The second phase of the project calls for the construction of a retail center with 10 storefronts.

The owners of the Mel-O-Crème ice cream shop located near the development site say they are excited for the volleyball court.

"Extra business, lots of fun for the people doing it, it will be wonderful," said Patricia Reino, who owns the shop with her husband Robert.

The project's developer says the Glass City Athletics building will offer more than just volleyball, though.

"We are building them a 25,000 square foot facility to do basketball, volleyball, baseball; everything that they do," said Stephanie Kuhlman with Industrial Developers.

The facility will host 2 day tournaments, bringing hundreds of athletes and their families to the area. With four indoor volleyball courts, the project will cost about $3 million.

The second phase of the project will include building restaurants, retail, coffee, and office spaces. The total cost including the volleyball facility will be more than $12 million.

No specific businesses have yet announced plans to move into the building.

Springfield Township Zoning Inspector Jacob Barnes says he hopes to keep businesses expanding along airport highway.

"Our master plan calls for various commercial and industrial uses, all the way down airport highway, all the way down to Eber road. So for sure depending on the success of this," said Barnes.
