Coast Guard saves six people from sinking boat on Portage River

PORT CLINTON, OH (WOIO) -

The Coast Guard rescued six people from the Portage River near Port Clinton, Ohio, Thursday, after the vessel they were aboard began taking on water.

The names of those rescued are not being released.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., a member of Rescue Marine Salvage Company notified the watch stander at Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ohio that a 28-foot charter vessel with six people aboard was taking on water.

A Station Marblehead boat crew responded aboard a 45-foot response boat.

They arrived on scene and found the vessel listing to the port side with its engine compartment flooded.
The crew removed five of the passengers from vessel for safety.

The owner stayed aboard while commercial salvage dewatered the vessel.

All passengers were taken back to Brands Marina where the source of the leak was found to be a decayed raw water hose.

"It has been a long winter and we know everyone is itching to get back on the water," said Mike Baron, the recreational boating safety specialist with the Coast Guard 9th District in Cleveland. "Make sure you check your entire boat and its gear before leaving the dock. Have a vessel safety check done by the Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadron."
