Slide Fire evacuated newlyweds enjoy night at hotel thanks to donation

With a holiday weekend coming up, the Slide Fire is also impacting vacationers. Like a newlywed couple whose campground honeymoon was cut short.
We caught up with them after they spent the night at their new digs.

Love birds Mickella and Nathan Westerfield have already been thrown a curve ball in the first few days as a married couple. They pooled all their money together to buy camping gear for their honeymoon.

"We figured if we buy all this camping gear, we'll be able to use it over and over again," Nathan Westerfield said.

But they had to abandon it once they drove into town for dinner and saw the smoke.

"As soon as we saw the first responder, I stopped and said should we go back," Nathan Westerfield said. "He said, 'No, get out of here.'"

They spent Monday night at the American Red Cross shelter at Sinagua Middle School.

"We didn't have anything, just the clothes on our back," Mickella Westerfield said.

But then they said someone from the middle school treated them to a hotel stay in Flagstaff and they are making the most of the first of many trips they'll take as husband and wife.

"We can't not enjoy ourselves with all the nice things everyone's done for us," Mickella Westerfield said.

"We owe it to them to enjoy ourselves," Nathan Westerfield said.
