Traffic was backed up for miles on Interstate 91 in Northampton and Holyoke Friday as rush hour and Memorial Day traffic was forced to squeeze through one travel lane.
The left lane of I-91 northbound over Route 5/Mount Tom Road in Northampton will be closed to traffic for approximately four weeks, according to MassDOT officials.
The exit 18 northbound on ramp will be closed as part of the repair work.
The closure comes after a bridge inspection discovered deterioration on a steel beam that will require emergency repairs.
The immediate closure is expected to impact holiday travels. No work will take place until Tuesday because delivery time for materials.
Drivers are encouraged to allow for extra travel time.
