Facebook scam hits Wood County

WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Wood County Sheriff's Office is investigating a recent scam in which a county resident's Facebook account was hacked and the scammer tried to solicit money from friends.

The sheriff's office says once the account was compromised, friends to the account were notified through a Facebook message that they were chosen winners of $150,000 from the Federal Empowerment Agency. The message said all they would have to do to claim the prize is pay $975 when the check arrives.

The sheriff warns that this scam is just an example of phishing, a method used with e-mails or online messages that seem legitimate and ask for financial information.

Everyone is advised to carefully screen all suspicious posts and messages.
