Call 11 for Action: Tall grass takes over Toledo park

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

If you want to use a city park, you may just have to help the city keep up with it!

Parents reached out to Toledo News Now after their children couldn't practice baseball at Friendship Park in Point Place because the grass was too high. We've been told by city officials that it isn't because the city doesn't want to maintain the parks, but the budget makes it difficult.

"We can't lay a blanket down. The ball won't roll," said Holly Ellerbush, a Point Place resident.

Ellerbush says the tall grass is unfortunate, especially since the weather is finally nice.

"After the winter that we've had, you know, the kids have been cooped up for so long, that I'd like to see the park be a priority this spring," she said.

City leaders say they'd like to make all of Toledo's 145 parks a priority, too, but since the parks and recreation budget comes from the general fund, they are first to see the cuts.

Recently, the city implemented an Adopt-A-Park program as part of an effort to get residents to step up and take care of their neighborhood park.

"I guess if we need to utilize something like that, get the community involved so that the kids can have a great, safe place to play, then that's something we all need to look into," said Ellerbush.

According to city officials, the park will be mowed by the end of the week.
