North Charleston mom accused of driving kids into the ocean gives birth

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WCSC/WKMG) - The 32-year-old North Charleston woman accused of driving her van into the ocean with her kids inside has given birth.

According to WKMG in Orlando, Fla., Ebony Wilkerson gave birth at the Halifax Medical Center. A report by WKMG states Wilkerson's newborn is with other family members.

Wilkerson is accused of driving a van into the ocean off Daytona beach on March 4. She's charged with three counts of attempted murder and child abuse.

Beachgoers helped pull Wilkerson and her three children from the surf.

On March 17, Wilkerson was involuntarily taken into custody since authorities say she seemed to be a threat to herself after beating her stomach with a fist.

Wilkerson's defense attorneys said their client's reaction was because her clothes were taken away and placed in solitary confinement.

According to Sheriff Ben Johnson with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, Wilkerson tried to intentionally kill her three kids, ages 3, 9 and 10 by driving a van into the ocean at Daytona Beach.

Police reports state that Wilkerson told authorities that she was trying to get away from her husband who she claimed had abused her.

Wilkerson's lawyer said their client has a mental disorder which kept Wilkerson from knowing the difference between right and wrong.
