Portion of building facade crumbles in east Toledo, then gets stolen

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A portion of an east Toledo building came crashing down on a busy sidewalk Wednesday morning.

The sidewalk in front of the Weber building on Front and Main is closed after a heavy piece of the facade fell from the third story.

Crews say it's lucky no one was injured by the huge piece of metal that fell from under a window, which probably weighs 100-200 pounds.

This is not the first time a piece of the facade has fallen off this building, which is why there's a concern it could happen again. A building inspector examined the outside of the building to figure out how this happened, if other structures could fall, and if the rest of the building is safe. It seems rotted wood was the cause.

"That's what we're gonna do: Secure the building so no one gets hurt. But it's an old building, it's gonna happen," said Bill Reece, a member from the maintenance crew.

If the facade is taken off this building, it could lose it's place on the historical registry.

The piece that fell is no longer there. Police believe scrappers took it to try to get a quick buck. They're currently checking scrap yards to see if anyone turned it in.
