Toledo Zoo opening three new bird exhibits

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Penguins, parakeets and flamingos are coming to the zoo this Friday when the Toledo Zoo opens up three new exhibits.

With just days to go, crews are working to make sure everything is completed before this weekend.

The barricades are still up and small projects are still in the works, all while the zoo promotes their big event this weekend across town.

"Animals are moving into their exhibits," said Toledo Zoo Executive Director Jeff Sailer.  "Maintenance crew and contractors are putting their final aesthetic touches.  The horticulturalists are planting bushes."

May 23 has been the target date for the grand opening of Flamingo Keys, Penguin Beach and the ‘Keat Retreat.

This week crews are up against the gun after trying to complete these exhibits in less than favorable conditions.

"It was set a year ago, so we've been working towards that," said Sailer.  "No one expected the worst winter ever in Toledo so that slowed us down a little bit."

Besides construction, the animals had to be transported to the zoo, quarantined and acquainted with their new digs.

More than 25 flamingos are being quarantined until at least Tuesday.  14 black-footed penguins were released into their exhibit Monday.
