Editorial: Protecting nature in the area is necessary for commerce

(Toledo News Now) -

Northwest Ohio just finished "the biggest week in bird watching in America." It was an unqualified success. Hotels, restaurants, shops all enjoyed the bounty of having tens of thousands of visitors spending days in our area. And these bird enthusiasts came from all over the world. It was an excellent week to improve the image of northwest Ohio. I got to believe the visitors left impressed.

On another note, an obvious takeaway is that we need to do everything possible to protect our bird sanctuaries and nesting areas. And, if infrastructure like walkways and raised platforms in viewing areas need repaired or rebuilt, this is money well spent.

Hopefully the value of this natural asset can be conveyed to local, state and federal government agencies. Estimates indicate this week brought in millions of dollars in commerce. That is significant and worth fighting for.

Now, take a moment to appreciate the financial value to our area from bird watching, fishing, vacationing, and boating and hunting. It is billions of dollars. Billions! Then realize that this all goes away in a hurry if we fail to protect Lake Erie and its surrounding ecology. Even if you never do any of the above, the math is still obvious, simple and irrefutable. We need a healthy lake and unspoiled wetlands.
