SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) - The Lucas County Sheriff's Office has made an arrest in a deadly overnight stabbing in Springfield Township.
Adam Akers, who had been living with the victim for the past six weeks, was arrested Thursday morning around 10 a.m. after being interviewed Wednesday night. He has been charged with murder.
The homicide happened at Royal Village Mobile Home Park on Dorr Street near King Road.
On Wednesday evening, law enforcement officers said they received a 911 call from a friend of the victim around 9 p.m. Wednesday. The friend had reportedly returned from a walk to find Judy Uyttenhove, 72, inside with several stab wounds.
On Thursday, they said it was, in fact, Akers who had called police.
A detective with the Lucas County Sheriff's Office says Uyttenhove was stabbed several times, but it was a stab wound to the torso which caused her death.
Grandson Justin Haas heard about the death from his cousin on Facebook, and immediately went to the residence. He broke the news to his mother about his grandmother's death.
"She's lost a few other people in the last six months and this is the last thing that she needed. She has a lot of people who love her and who will stand by her through this, and hopefully we can find the guy who did this, so that my mom can get some kind of comfort out of it," said Haas. "She's not taking it very well and we'll do everything we can. This was her mom. I can't imagine losing her."
The crime scene is still active, with multiple detectives, deputies and members of BCI continuing the investigation.
Uyttenhove had only lived at the residence for a few months. She had lived there with her daughter, who died not long ago, but was recently living with Bill Akers, who was dating her late daughter, as well as his son, Adam.
"His father was a friend of the victim's daughter. She had since passed, so it left the father, Adam, and the victim. The father was not home at the time," said Det. Jeff Kozak.
Residents are sad to hear the news and remember their neighbor as a quiet, friendly woman.
"I thought that was crazy. That has never happened around in this area before. Springfield is a nice, quiet place," said Brandi Deceant, who lives nearby.
"I didn't realize that she had been stabbed. I thought she died of a heart attack or something. It was terrible news," said Karen Pence, who lives next door.
Akers will be in Sylvania Municipal Court on Friday morning.
