BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A very special memorial service took place Wednesday May 14 in Bowling Green. The ceremony honored and remembered officers from the county who have been killed in the line of duty, dating back to 1896.

Twelve fallen officers were honored at the Wood County Courthouse. The ceremony was initially going to take place on the steps of the courthouse outside, but because of rain the ceremony was moved inside to the atrium.

The ceremony brought in police and officials from all over Wood County. The event featured speeches, the honor guard and the reading of the names of the twelve officers killed in the line of duty, including some of their stories.

"Every officer knows when they take the job that they could end up in a life threatening situation, but we put on the badge and we go to work every day in spite of those things and we hope that our community supports us," said Deputy Chief Tony Hetrick.

The most recent of the twelve fallen officers was killed in the line of duty back in 1984. Wood County has held this memorial service for over 25 years.
