Family of teen killed on Lake Erie hires law firm to investigate

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The family of a South Carolina teen killed in a Lake Erie boating accident has hired a Toledo law firm to represent them.

Paige Widmer, 16, was killed along with 3 others when their boat somehow overturned in Lake Erie on April 17. Amy Santus, Bryan Huff and Andrew Rose were also killed in the accident.

The coast guard has not said what caused the boat to overturn, but has said Widmer and Santus were wearing life jackets when their bodies were recovered.

The law firm says they will work with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to "make sure nothing is left uncovered."

Attorneys say they hope to look at GPS data from the boat. Lawyers for the family say Widmer's cell phone was recovered, and has since been drying in a bag of rice. The law firm also plans to hire a boating expert to examine the boat and its engine.

The attorney representing the family says the evidence so far suggests the four had at least some warning that something had gone wrong.

"Because we have earlier pictures and video of her on the boat without a life vest it leads us to believe something catastrophic occurred where there was some danger, where they had time to put on that life jacket and were found," said attorney Chad Tuschman.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the United States Coast Guard are still working to complete an investigation report on the incident.
