Whitmer High recognized as Purple Heart School for veteran projects

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Whitmer High School received some very special recognition Tuesday May 13 for their work with veterans.

Whitmer has become the first high school in the country to be named a Purple Heart High School. The ceremony recognized students and faculty. This high honor comes from the many hours spent volunteering on veteran related projects.

"Our Veterans Day assembly, the $46,000 we've raised for our post. We do a veterans tailgate in the fall," said Chris Hodnicki, Whitmer High School teacher.

That's just a small taste of what's being done. On the last Saturday of May, as they do every year, students and teachers will be putting American flags on the graves of veterans at Toledo Memorial Park.

"I do it for the community. I just like getting out there. I like giving back to what they do for us," said Megan Krotzer, 11th grade student at Whitmer High School.

Local veterans are grateful and thankful for the work being done at Whitmer and other area schools.

"For me to see this is actually a real big deal. It's nice to see Whitmer being recognized for what all these students do to show how much they care about us," said Lianne Whitaker, US Army Veteran and Whitmer graduate.

"In the community here we have a lot of purple heart veterans and they do a lot for the school and the school does a lot for our post," said Larry Gring, US Navy Veteran.

Three more area schools will be recognized as Purple Heart schools in the coming weeks. They include Greenwood Elementary, Jefferson Junior High and Washington Junior High.
