No charges filed, investigation of Sylvania teacher/student relationship

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

An inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student is under investigation by the Sylvania school system. Police have been notified, but as of now no charges will be filed.

The female teacher never had any authority over the student, meaning she was not his teacher or even a coach. The male high school student is over the age of consent, which is 16-years-old in Ohio, so no charges will be filed. But that is not stopping a school investigation.

"I think for high school, no teacher should be with a high school student even if you are not their direct teacher," said Joan Kitchen, Sylvania Township resident.

The teacher works as a special areas teacher at Stranahan elementary school. School administrators say they have put the teacher on paid administrative leave, and are investigating to find out if any policies have been broken. They say they hope to have a full resolution to the matter within a week. They say the two never had any type of interaction through the school system.

"If an adult is a coach, a teacher, a school leader, something like that and has direct authority over a juvenile, it can be a violation. However in this case the teacher does not teach in the same school, does not teach in a class with this student, doesn't have any contact officially as a student teacher relationship," said Rick Schnoor, Sylvania Police.

Police say other future charges are something they would look into.

"If any information comes out that we either need to file charges or investigate further we certainly will, but at this time the matter is being handled by the Sylvania school district," said Schnoor.

The school system has also notified child protective services about the matter.
