(WMC) - Former Ole Miss basketball player Marshall Henderson is under fire for comments he posted on Twitter about an openly gay football player's reaction after being drafted this weekend.

After former Missouri Tiger standout Michael Sam was selected by the St. Louis Rams, cameras capture a kiss between Sam and his boyfriend. The clip was shown on media outlets across the country.

Marshall Henderson first posted this to Twitter on Monday:

"Boycotting sportscenter til [sic] this michael sam nasty a-- s--- is off .... My brothers are 7 and 11 and saw that!!! #SICKENING"

It did not take long before that tweet caught the attention of news and sports outlets.

Memphis' 92.9 ESPN radio host Eric Hasseltine took calls from fans with plenty to say about Henderson's tweet.

"Sports is the only thing today, in today's world, that we can sit down and enjoy and not think I have to worry about what is my son going to see," said one caller.

Another called the radio show to say, "To me, it really doesn't matter. It's how you perform on the field."

Henderson is no longer a member of the Rebels basketball team, but the university's athletic director, Ross Bjork responded, "I'm extremely disappointed and we do not condone the statements made by our former basketball player. We believe in respect and dignity for all......"

Henderson has since told people that the comments were made to help a friend with a school report and gauge "reaction" from the public.

"One of my best friends, WHO IS GAY, is about to graduate in psychology, asked me to say these things so he can have responses ... TBC"

Whether it was because of his obscene gestures to fans or drug charges, Henderson was in the limelight for many reasons as a player at Ole Miss. Many people were not surprised he was back at it again now that his playing days are over.

"There's going to be backlash. Whether he agrees with it or not, there are going to be people that say, you can't say that," said Hasseltine.
