SUGARCREEK TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) -

An investigation is underway after a Stark County farmer accidentally shot and killed one of his farm hands.

19 Action News has learned that on May 5, the elderly Sugar Creek Township farmer mistook the worker, Natasha Stover, for a groundhog and accidentally shot her in the head as she was lying in tall grass.

Stover was rushed to the hospital, where she died the following day.

The 79-year-old farmer, whom has not yet been charged, told police he was shooting at targets when he took aim at what he thought was a groundhog. The single shot was fired from a distance of 165 feet away, roughly half the length of a football field.

The case has been handed over to the prosecutor's office for review.

A fund has been established to help the Stover family. Anyone wishing to make a donation may do so HERE.
