Police seeking suspects in theft from President Garfield's monument

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) -

Cleveland Heights police are investigating a breaking and entering and theft from the James Garfield Monument at Lake View cemetery on Euclid Avenue.

Police were called early Wednesday morning when an employee found the door to the monument open and about two dozen demitasse spoons and teaspoons missing. A lock had been broken and was also missing. Officers also saw pieces of glass around the scene

Cigarette butts, a t-shirt and a bottle of whiskey was found nearby. A fingerprint is also being investigated.

Cemetery management told police about a former employee who had been acting strangely, but officers have not identified any suspects.

Garfield, the 20th president, his wife, and the remains of his daughter and her husband are also in the monument.

President Garfield's casket is the only presidential casket on full display.
