No bond allowed for man accused in gas station shooting

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A man accused in a fatal gas station shooting no longer has the option to make bond.

Bond previously was set at $500,000 for Dontae D. Jefferson, but the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office announced Friday afternoon that Jefferson will remain jailed and cannot make bond.

This comes after a Jackson County grand jury on Friday afternoon indicted Jefferson for first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, child endangerment, unlawful possession of a firearm and shooting at a person.

The indictments supersede the charges previously filed by Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker. Prosecutors in Missouri often use the grand jury process when they want to withhold information that would have as part of a preliminary hearing when charges are filed.

Baker did not explain Friday afternoon her decision to have a grand jury supersede the charges.

Jefferson is accused of going to a gas station on April 18 and firing the shots that killed K.C. Curry, 35, and left his 10-year-old son, Ka'Vyea, paralyzed.

A 5-year-old boy was also inside the vehicle when gunfire broke out but was not injured.

Authorities have not revealed a motive, but have indicated that Curry may have been targeted.
