Lockdown lifted at Toledo Christian Schools after false alarm

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Toledo Police Department says Toledo Christian Schools' lockdown has been lifted.

Police say the students were never in danger.

Sgt. Joe Heffernan says an off-duty police officer dropped off his child at the school and had his weapon holstered. He had his badge on his belt, but it was not visible, which raised concerns and led a parent to call police.

"We spoke with the officer and advised him if he brings his sidearm in school, to make sure to cover it up or is in uniform," said Heffernan.

But after the parent called 911, school staff was notified and teachers were instructed to begin lockdown procedures, while the threat was investigated.

Toledo police arrived on the scene within minutes. Despite the big misunderstanding, school officials say everything went according to plan.

"Everyone did a good job. Our A.L.I.C.E. system worked and it went as planned, as we rehearsed it," said Jeff Gagle with Toledo Christian Schools.

The school was in close communication during the brief lockdown. Parents received two text messages: when the lockdown happened, and when police gave the all clear and provided more details.

"I think they did a great job. TPD too," said parent Dan Beard.

This stems from a parent being proactive in a day and age when we are all on heightened alert.

"Everybody is pretty in tune to school safety, as they should be. Whenever anything happens that involves any school safety issue, we respond in force and quickly, as in evidence today," said Heffernan.

This year's Race for the Cure in Findlay is taking place right in the middle of a September heat wave. Temperatures at race time will be in the 70s. By midday expect temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s under bright sunshine. This would be a hot and oppressive day right in the middle of summer, let alone in late September.  Be sure to prepare for the conditions by drinking plenty of fluids and considering wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
