Plan to build new Toledo fire house hits $600,000 snag

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A plan to construct a new fire house in north Toledo is going to cost the city a lot more than originally planned.

The project was originally projected to cost the city $5 million. Now contractors say an additional $600,000 is needed for extra materials dirt to stabilize the station.

The 14,000 square foot facility will allow the department to get to fires in the north end faster. The department had planned for crews to finish construction sometime this summer. Now, that deadline will have to be pushed back.

"In any construction project you're gonna have issues, you're gonna have over runs and problems that come up and I don't see this as anything different than that," said Toledo Fire Lieutenant Matthew Hertzfeld.

The department says samples of soil were taken before construction by the contractor in charge of the project, Midwest Contracting. Once construction started, TFD says it was discovered more fill will be needed to stabilize the new station.

City Finance Director George Sarantou says the money will come from the 2014 capital improvement budget.

"It is a go. It's an important project for the citizens of north Toledo and Mayor Collins is committed, as usual to public safety," said Sarantou.

City leaders say the delays will not put residents at risk.
