Family asking for donations after teen’s mom was brutally killed with hammer

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A 14-year-old is the eye witness to her mother's death, and she was lucky to survive and escape after being attacked.

It happened in South Carolina, but the teen, Makayla Hafling, is now back in Toledo with family. A long road to recovery is ahead for her, and family friends are asking you to help.

The weekend of May 2, Hafling and her mother Tracey Koepfler were attacked inside a Sumpter, South Carolina home. Police say Jason Dustin Compton beat Koepfler to death with a hammer after sexually assaulting her. Hafling was also attacked but got away.

Hafling and her sister are planning their mother's funeral.

"It was really devastating. It's really hard to see someone that's been a little sister to all of us go through this," said family friend Angela Bergfeld.

Friends of the family are stepping in to make sure Hafling is taken care of.

"Makayla is an amazing little girl who deserves all this. We're trying to raise money for funeral expenses but also for Makayla for college funds and a car and medical expenses," said family friend Sammi Bedard.

A fund has been set up both online and at Fifth Third Bank under the name Makayla Hafling.
