TPS grade revision affects Ohio's largest districts after scrubbing scandal

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

East Broadway Middle School in East Toledo is the school that had seen the most significant rating drop with the state's revised grades for the 2011 school year, dropping two grades to an emergency level.

Those revisions were released by the Ohio Department of Education on Tuesday and it stems from scrubbing. Scrubbing is where school districts are accused of improperly reporting attendance information in order to help boost up a rating. A spokesperson for Toledo Public Schools says it was all a big misunderstanding.

"We did not do it to gain the system, we did it because we thought it was reflective of the students we were serving and a student who misses 20 days of absences and 5 consecutive in essence is missing 15% of the school year," said Jim Gault, Toledo Public Schools.

In the state's eyes those students should count when it comes to grading schools and districts. For the 2011 school year hundreds of students were improperly withdrawn from Toledo Public Schools during the 2011 school year.

"We're complying with what the state is asking, we are standing by our integrity that when the state said this was not an allowable practice, we immediately stopped," said Gault.

Overall Toledo Public School ratings only dropped a point with the state's revision. Nineteen of the 26 schools that were being investigated had actually improved, while the others dropped one level.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round.
