Officials in court over north Toledo recycling center fire

Now that a fire at the Stickney Recycling plant is out, the company is facing shutdown and fines. If a settlement agreement cannot be reached Tuesday, a date for another hearing will be scheduled.
The fire at the recycling center burned from Friday morning until Monday afternoon.
A health alert was issued not long after the fire began. It was lifted over the weekend.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Now that a fire at the Stickney Recycling plant is out, the company is facing shutdown and fines.

Officials discovered that the landfill fire started back on April 14, which means it had been burning for more than two weeks. Besides the fire, the state is accusing the landfill of violating several other regulations.

Representatives from the Attorney General's Office, along with the EPA and landfill, decided to conduct a settlement agreement with the plant. If they cannot agree Tuesday, a date for another hearing will be scheduled.

State officials have charged the facility with nine different counts. They claim the landfill has failed to cover disposed waste with nonflammable material, has had personnel that were not familiar with proper operating procedures, and has failed to prevent littering -- just to name a few.

The fire started Friday morning, and Toledo Fire & Rescue said it was not extinguished until Monday afternoon.

The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department issued a smoke warning to residents, urging those in the area to stay indoors. That warning was lifted over the weekend.

On Monday, the health department conducted tests of the smoke and materials which burned, and said results showed no concerns.

Stickney Recycling will continue to monitor the area to ensure the fire does not reignite, and will also monitor the air around the center.

It is unable to accept new materials because of a restraining order issued after the fire began.
