Northview students play donkey basketball to raise money for Prom

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Sylvania Northview took the basketball court Monday night for a different way to raise money: donkey basketball.

For the Junior class at Northview, the ultimate goal is to raise money for their Senior Prom.

"Fundraising these days has become such a crowded field," said Junior Class Advisor Perry Lefevre.  "We decided this is just not something that has been done in this area in a very long time, so we thought that we'd like to revive it."

Everyone playing donkey basketball wears a helmet and goes through training before they play.  With the help of carrots as motivation, the kids and staff played six minute quarters and scored some not so easy baskets.

In the past, events like this have drawn opposition from animal activist groups, but donkey basketball in Northview went off without a hitch.

"The money generally that (students) raise throughout the course of high school helps to fray the cost of their prom," said Lefevre.  "We try to earn enough money to make that senior year affordable."

BYLINE: Victoria Idoni DOWNTOWN TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - If you made it downtown today, you may have noticed more orange barrels crowding our roadways. What does all of this mean for local businesses? There is going to be a lot of road construction work going on, and much of the timeframe depends on the weather. The question area businesses are most concerned with is: whether or not this temporary inconvenience will be worth it in the long run. Bric...
