Only on 11: Health insurance benefits may have gone to non-eligible city employees

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Some current and former Toledo city employees are being accused of wrongdoing when it comes to their health insurance plans.

Mayor Michael Collins discussed that at least $250,000 of health insurance benefits may have gone to non-eligible people who were on health insurance plans belonging to city employees, including a $112,000 tab from one non-eligible person and a $70,000 tab from another.

"When there's a misappropriation of funds, it affects every employee and therefore a message has to be sent that no employee shall engage in activities which will compromise our health insurance," said Collins.

Collins said that up to a total of 10 city employees may have had non-eligible people taking part in the city's healthcare plan, some of which have been fired from the city.

"We are also at this moment in time doing a complete audit of our healthcare plan to make sure we don't have eligibility problems," said Collins

The people involved most likely will have to pay the money back and some of them may also face criminal charges. The Toledo Police Department says they are currently investigating this case.
