Wayne Trail Elementary implements looping to build teacher and student relationships

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - One Maumee school is implementing a new way to build relationships between teachers and students.

Beginning next year, fifth grade students at Wayne Trail Elementary School will have the same teacher they had in the fourth grade.

The new program is called looping. Essentially students and teachers will follow each other to the next grade level. This will happen with the only two grade levels at Wayne Trail: 4th and 5th grades.

This new program was established after research showed looping builds student and teacher relationships. It also saves teachers six weeks of instructional time because teachers already know the behavior and routine of the students.

"We're going to increase our instructional time in our core content areas with our new teaming format. With that they can spend more time with math and reading and hopefully that will transpire to higher test scores," said Dr. Nick Neiderhouse, Principal of Wayne Trail Elementary.

Looping will start at the beginning of next school year and Wayne Trail Elementary has committed to using it for the next four years.
