HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

A Richmond family involved in an accident on Interstate 295 last week is organizing a fundraiser for the tow-truck driver killed in the crash.

Jason Bailey, 22, was killed in Thursday's crash, while towing Avonnia Jewel Gregory's car on the side of the interstate. Bailey leaves behind a son, who is less than a year old.

"If it wasn't for his persistence in requesting for us to leave as he handled the task of securing my daughter's vehicle onto the flat bed, it would have been us who was hit by the drunk driver," writes Annovia's mother, Jewel Gregory. The family went to Bailey's viewing Sunday and was touched.

"He appeared to have been a very special person. It is obvious that he is going to be extremely missed,"she writes.

The family is holding a fundraiser on Saturday at the SweetFrog on Forest Hill Ave. The family says all proceeds from the event as well as a percentage of profits for that day will be given to the trust fund for Jason's son.

"He requested for us to leave and subsequently, minutes later, he was struck and killed," writes Annovia. "This entire ordeal is still so surreal to us, however, we are grateful for who he was and all that he stood for."

Dwayne Gray Miller Jr., 31, of Mechanicsville, was driving drunk when his SUV ran off the road, struck the wrecker and then Bailey, according to State Police. He faces charges of DUI, refusal to submit to breath/blood sample, involuntary manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and obstruction of justice, according to police.
