Train enthusiasts flock to Amtrak Station for Toledo Train Day

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Thousands of people learned what it's like to ride the rails on Saturday.

They came to the Amtrak Station in Toledo as part of Toledo Train Day.

The celebration is one of the largest in the country.

It's traditionally one week ahead of National Train Day.

Many who came had never been on a passenger train.

Tours were given of Amtrak's Capital Limited Superline cars.

The train runs between Chicago and Washington D.C. with a daily stop in Toledo.

Train enthusiasts says this is the most relaxed way to travel the country.

"You can walk the train from one end to the other. They have a café car. The long distance trains have observation cars where you can see the scenery," said Steve Sobel.

One of the reasons for Train Day is to let local travelers know Toledo has a passenger train station.

The goal is to promote that service and encourage folks to buy a ticket and hop on board.

"You can get to Chicago, Washington, Boston, New York on the train. People come in here and say 'I didn't even know we had this'," said Bill Gill of Toledo Train Day.

The Northwest Ohio Passenger Rail Association would like to see even more destinations offered.

It's working to convince Amtrak to increase the number of passenger trains through Toledo.

The group points to Japan and Europe as examples of efficient, fast and economic rail travel.

"It's beneficial to the community, beneficial to the state and it makes it a lot easier for our older generation to get around," said Tim Porter of the Association.

And, they say, it's a way to keep Toledo on the right track for future generations of travelers.
