TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

When D. Michael Collins was elected mayor in November, he had to give up his District 2 seat on Toledo City Council.

Four candidates are running for the seat. One will be elected on Tuesday.

District 2 is in south Toledo and the Anthony Wayne Trail cuts right through it.

Neighborhoods and businesses line Byrne and Reynolds roads, Glendale Avenue and Heatherdowns Boulevard.

"We want people to have a job. We want people to live a good life, promote the city" said Independent candidate Marcia Helman.

"We got to start attracting business and generating revenue," added Republican Joe Celusta.

Democrat Matt Cherry was appointed to the Collins seat.

"I have a very young family. I love being in District 2 and I want to see it do good," said Cherry.

The big issue for Democrat Bob Vasquez?

"Of course, Southwyck. That's always the one thing on people's minds," he said.

That's because the former site of a sprawling mall along Reynolds Road is a vacant eyesore. It's been that way for several years.

What do the District 2 candidates plan to do to resurrect the property?

"We need to get on the landlord's case, tidy it up and get it ready for the next suitor" suggested Celusta.

"One thing the city can do is try to work with the private owners to persuade them as a good partner to try to get business in there who can develop that" explained Vasquez.

"The magic bullets would be the mayor and his administration, and I intend - if elected - to work closely with the mayor on Southwyck," Helman said.

That's something Councilman Cherry says he's been doing.

"We got the HomeGoods store coming in. A great thing Mayor Collins and his economic team have done and have me part of it. I really appreciate it," said Cherry.

New ideas from candidates who want to make a difference in District 2.

Toledo has a long and storied history of hockey in the city going back to the first team, the Toledo Mercurys, who played their first season in 1947-48. Other iterations included the Blades, the Hornets, the Goaldiggers and the Storm. For a short time, in 1949-50, the team was actually called the Toledo Buckeyes.
