South Toledo apartment fire forces out several families

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Several families were forced out of their homes late Thursday night after a fire at an apartment complex on South Village Drive near the Ohio Turnpike in south Toledo.

The fire broke out in the second floor unit of Heath-Briar Apartments. The woman who lives directly below that unit says she heard banging Thursday night, and then her neighbor yelling "there is a fire in my apartment and I can't get it out." That's when she saw the smoke rolling down the steps.

On Friday, residents were able to return to their apartments. Most were moving out belongings.

Residents say the apartment complex is offering new units for tenants to move in to, as well as hotel rooms. While tenants were packing up, clean-up crews began the massive job of sanitizing and wiping down walls and windows.

The Toledo Fire Department says one person, possibly two, jumped off a balcony. Three people were treated at a Toledo hospital, although they will not say if it's related to smoke inhalation or jumping. When fire crews arrived on scene, firefighters helped several people off the balconies.

"It was scary at first because they were trying to get the third-floor tenants down and they were panicking because they were above the fire, and the fire and the smoke was rising," said Maria Jones, a fire victim.

Jones says she witnessed one woman being forced to jump from her balcony. She said she was scared and didn't jump far enough, hitting the second-floor balcony railing, then the ground.

A total of 12 units were affected and one building was affected. There is no external damage visible on the apartment building.
