Sheriff tips for keeping kids safe during prom season

WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Wood County Sheriff will be keeping a closer eye on children this prom season. The sheriff's office has plenty of cars ready to roll out in full force this month for this year's prom blitz.

The sheriff says there are a few things all parents need to know before your kids hop in the car on the way to prom.

First ask yourself who is behind the wheel. Does this person have a history of speeding or erratic driving?

Make sure there is no alcohol stashed in the car.

Finally, know the habits of your own kids. Will they speak up if anything is awry? Will they call you if they need help?

The sheriff says the more people packed into your child's car, the more at risk they are of getting in a crash.

"If you have one more, you're quadrupling the odds of a crash. If you have three more it just keeps exponentially increasing with each person that's in the car that's a non family member," said Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn.

If you can afford it, one of the easiest ways to make sure your children get home safe and sound is to simply rent a limo or take advantage of another type of rental service.
