Start student arraigned after police say he brought gun to school

Willie Carter III, the 18-year-old who forced Start High School into lockdown Monday appeared in court Tuesday morning after being arrested for having a loaded handgun in the west Toledo school.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Willie Carter III, the 18-year-old who forced Start High School into lockdown Monday, appeared in court Tuesday morning after being arrested for having a loaded handgun in the west Toledo school.

Because of Carter's age, he will not go to juvenile court, but Toledo Municipal Court instead.

Police detectives say Carter is associated with the Lawrence Blood Villains (LBV) gang.

On Monday morning during a scuffle with Carter, the school resource officer found a loaded 45-caliber handgun, along with seven bags of marijuana packaged to sell.

Carter was likely able to get the gun into the high school because there are currently no metal detectors at that school building, according to TPS officials.

Carter faces three gun-related charges, in addition to charges for resisting arrest and drug trafficking.  He's being held on $125,000 bond, $25,000 per charge, and his pretrial is scheduled for May 8.
