Bond set for school bomb threat suspect

The 22-year-old man police say admitted to calling in fake bomb threats to several schools around northwest Ohio faced a judge Monday, April 28 in Ottawa County Municipal Court.

Police say Charles Tingler called in a bomb threat to Waite High School on Friday, along with Sandusky and Oak Harbor schools April 21.

The Ottawa County Sheriff says his office found that the calls were made using a smart phone app called Spoof. After subpoenaing the provider, police say they tracked the calls to Tingler on Friday. 

Currently, Tingler is charged with inducing panic in connection with bomb threats that he admitted placing to Oak Harbor. The felonious charge carries up to eight years in a state prison and a fine of up to $15,000.

More charges could be filed for the other school incidents.

Tingler did not have a lawyer on Monday, so the court will appoint one for him.

Since this is a felony, the municipal court cannot accept a guilty or not guilty plea. Tingler's bond was set at $250,000.  

A continuation hearing has been granted until May 5.

Police say Tingler is not responsible for a threat called in to Port Clinton High School.

"We spoke with each suspect and each suspect claims sole responsibility," said Port Clinton Police Detective Corbin Carpenter.

Alexander Fletcher, 24, has been charged with the Port Clinton threat and a subsequent nearby robbery. Police say Fletcher admitted he was on heroine at the time of the robbery.

"I think he had a substance abuse problem that kind of influenced his actions," said Carpenter.
