Gov. Bentley declares state of emergency for entire state

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Gov. Robert Bentley has declared a state of emergency for all of Alabama as a result of the severe weather impacting the state.

"Some of our communities have already experienced significant damage as a result of the tornadoes that began moving through Alabama earlier today," Bentley said. "By issuing a State of Emergency, I am directing all state agencies to take necessary actions to respond to Alabama communities that need help."

According to the governor, the Alabama Emergency Management Agency activated the State Emergency Operations Center in Clanton to a level two at 7 p.m. Monday. The governor has also authorized the mobilization of 100 Alabama National Guard members to be on stand by.

First responders and law enforcement are already assisting communities that have experienced damage. Authorities are reporting that at least six people have died after a tornado moved through Limestone County on Monday. 

Alabama Power is reporting that 5,800 customers are without power across the state.

WSFA 12 New's Doppler 12 Storm Vision team will keep you updated on the severe weather from start to finish. According to WSFA Meteorologist Josh Johnson severe weather will not move into WSFA 12 News viewing area until Monday night.

The Alabama Emergency Management Agency is encouraging residents to prepare, plan and stay information as the severe weather approaches. It's also important to minimize travel during severe weather.

Some school systems in our area will be closed or delayed Tuesday. We will continue to update our list of school closings.
