MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) -

One person is dead following a massive house fire in Middletown on Thursday afternoon.

The fire started at a home on El Camino Drive. Authorities say that while fighting the blaze, crews were ordered out of the building as the fire was too big. Firefighters say they then initiated a defensive exterior attack for approximately 45 minutes.

Crews entering the building found one woman deceased. Firefighters say they think the deceased was the only individual left in the home. However, crews are still searching.

Firefighters are attempting to determine the cause and source of the fire.

This is the second fatal fire this month in Middletown. A 32-year-old woman died in an apartment fire on April 9.

The Middletown Firefighters Union said as the city cuts jobs in the coming months, more deadly fires could be expected. 15 firefighters will be laid-off in August.

The union president said Middletown city managers are not allowing him to apply for a grant that could save the 15 jobs.
