Residents strike back after rash of break-ins

(WMC) - High Point Terrace residents are on high alert after a rash of recent break-ins in the East Memphis neighborhood.

Houses and cars have been hit in recent weeks and now the neighborhood is planning to fight back.

A Memphis police surveillance camera keeps close watch on the frequently used Shelby Farms Greenline, but the unwanted guests are the ones who have High Point Terrace residents worried.

Van Funderburk says his mother-in-law's home, located just around the corner from his, was recently hit. Burglars broke through a window in the days following her death at age 93, adding frustration to an already sad occasion.

"Didn't trash it ... just took the television and some jewelry," said Funderburk.

More commonly, neighbors say cars and trucks have been the targets of thieves.

"We've been hearing a lot of things. It seems every night somebody's car is getting at least rifled through, if not windows smashed out," said High Point Terrace resident Sally Walker Davies. "And it doesn't matter if the car's parked on the street or in the driveway, but it's happening quite a bit."

According to the High Point Terrace Neighborhood Watch Facebook page, residents will soon form a so-called unit. They will be encouraged to immediately send alerts by phone or text.

The Facebook page administrator posted, "Without your help we will not reduce the car break-ins or get a grip on crime in HPT."

"I think the great thing is people do look out for each other here. So, everybody's been on top of it, and that's really reassuring," said Davies.

High Point's neighborhood watch meeting is Saturday, May 10. Memphis police encourage other neighborhoods to organize as well.
