Clerk cost taxpayers $15K after embezzling

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South town clerk is charged with embezzling thousands of dollars.

The former town clerk in Como, Mississippi is accused of signing the mayor's name on several checks. It has cost the town and its taxpayers more than $15,000. Investigators also say her husband was involved.

Former Como town clerk Kara Killebrew did not have anything to say about charges that she forged checks over the past several weeks.

Karen Ott Mayer is head of main street development and cannot believe Killebrew is accused of pocketing city money while she was clerk. She was fired about around the same time allegations surfaced.

"She was always professional, helped us with any main street business we had to conduct," said Ott Mayer.

Investigators say a town check requires two signatures: the clerk's and the mayor's. Killebrew is accused of signing off for both. Mayer thinks more eyes should have been on the clerks because the town has had money go missing before.

"My question would be how long it's been going on, whether or not there was proper oversight," said Mayer.

Killebrew's husband, Marcus, is charged with conspiracy. Investigators say the two were caught trying to get someone else to cash the bogus checks at a Southaven bank this week, after she was already removed from her position as clerk.

Investigators say many more charges could be filed against the couple and at least one other person who may have been involved.

Kara Killebrew is charged with nine counts of uttering a forgery and one count of embezzlement. Bond is set at $33,000

Marcus Killebrew is charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit a crime. His bond is set at $30,000.
